Christmas Songz

So it’s December. YAY! This is my favorite time of year, holidaze OD. Think about it, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year. Bing bang boom! I love it. October and December are my favorite months of the year, and the Christmas season is my favorite season. Listening to Christmas music, going to holiday parties, seeing everyone come home is so super fun and exciting! Since I’m missing out on all that this year, I’m making up for it by going to the biggest Christmas market in France on the 16th and I really can’t wait for the Christmas OD I am going to experience there (Erin I wish you could come with me!). Then it is off to Germany to spend Christmas with my cousin Hambone/ Hamburglar.

To prepare, I have been listening pretty much since November 1st, to Christmas music. You say too early, I say I do what I want (Cartman voice)! Thanks to Spotify, I have had access to Justin Bieber’s new Christmas album as well as Michael Buble’s. To those of you who hate on Bieber, you don’t know what you are missing he is actually awesome. I’m 22 and I love Justin Bieber… hate on haterz

Anyways I have been inspired to post on my Top 10 favorite Holiday Tunez. I love top 10 lists (if you want to waste your entire day, check out so this is exciting that this is my first published (kind of) list ever!

10. I Can’t Wait for Christmas- Mindi Abair

This is so jazzy and easy to listen to. I found it on a Christmas station at my parent’s house making cookies years ago. Will easily become a top pick for anyone who enjoys a little bit of jazzy Christmas vibe.

9. Christmas Time is Here- Diana Krall

Who doesn’t love Charlie Brown? If you don’t well maybe you should get yourself checked out or something. Charlie Brown is classic and this song which is from the cartoon Christmas movie is classic as well. Diana Krall has an amazing voice and this song has a great vibe to it as well. Thanks dad for showing this to me!

8. Mistletoe- Colbie Caillait

I’m not sure where I found this but I did and it’s a sad Christmas song. If you are broken up with on Christmas eve, check this baby out. If not but you just like her voice then check this out too haha. Fortunately I’ve never had Christmas heartbreak but I still love this song.

7. White Christmas- Bing Crosby

Bing Crosby’s voice is the definition of Christmas songmanship (in my opinion) and I just love the movie that matches this song. So romantical!

6. Holly Jolly Christmas- Burl Ives

I LOVED this song when I was a kid, probably because of the singing snowman in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer the claymation movie who was voiced by Burl Ives. I have no idea who Burl Ives is (sorry, I was practically born in the 90s) but this song has been one of my favorites since I was a small child. I used to listen to this in the summer when I thought no one was listening… yeah I was weird.

5. I’ll be Home for Christmas- Michael Buble

Well clearly I like this one since I’m not home for Christmas this year. However I am a sucker for Mr. Buble’s voice and I’ve appreciated this song a lot more as I got older and the realization that I may not always be with my family on Christmas loomed in the future. Anyways this is my all time favorite version of it. That got really philosophical… good thing I’m a sophisticated lady who listens to jazz and lives in France haha.

4. Blue Christmas- Celine Dion

I know I know blasphemy! I didn’t choose the Elvis version, and Celine Dion is kind of weird now that she is like out in Vegas doin her thang with her old man husband. I don’t know who bought the Celine Dion album at my house but somehow it finds its way on every Christmas and this is the best song off the CD hands down. Most of the CD is terrible and makes me want to stab my eardrums out, but I think this song is great, even if it is kind of really super depressing. I do have to say though I prefer her CD to the Chicago Christmas album (sorry dad!)

3. All I Want for Christmas is You- Mariah Carey ft. Justin Bieber

OK CALM DOWN PEOPLE I know you are all about to loose your cool on this one. GO LISTEN TO THE SONG and then come back and if you really hate it then you can yell. However, I think its better than the original. Here’s why: 1. Mariah 10,12, however many years later can still KILL those vocals and the quality of her voice has only improved. 2. Justin Bieber actually has talent and he sounds mature and deep here and it complements Mariah completely. The video is fun too and I want to steal her dress and wear it. Also I’m a sucker for the Biebs.

2. Baby It’s Cold Outside- Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton

This one I will fight you on if you say you know a better version. I don’t care for Rod Stewart (ever since my mom told me she thought he was “sexy” when I was 15 I’ve been scared) or Dolly Parton really either however I LOVE this song. I don’t know what it is, but I am obsessed. I have like 10 versions on my Christmas playlist on iTunes but none at all compare to this. Dolly is the perfect coquette and Rod does sound pretty dang sexy; I’d let him pour me half a drink more (if I didn’t know what he looked like or that he was like 60 years older than me).

1. Last Christmas-Wham!

I know what you are thinking “WHAT THE… (insert explicative of your choice here, my new favorite is PUNAISE aka bed bugs)” but you can’t deny its infectious. Although I was born in the 80s, I only lived for 5 months during the era so I can’t really call myself a product of the 80s. I’m not a big 80s fan and generally the music produced during this time (with a few exceptions) makes me want to stab things. This song is one of those exceptions. It just (ear)worms its way into your heart and then its there to stay. I definitely heard this on the radio in high school and have been obsessed with it since then.

Honorable Mentions: The Christmas Song- Nat King Cole, Santa Baby- Madonna, Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree- Brenda Lee, and Jingle Bell Rock

I kind of live in a delusional world in my mind that is secretly hoping at all times that my life will somehow turn into a Christmas song/movie. So far, I’m still waiting, but I’m keeping hope that it may happen some day, in some way (as long as its not as a dysfunctional family way like in Christmas Vacation).

I have also felt inspired to do a movie list since I am so much in the Christmas spirit now

6. Home Alone

5. Charlie Brown Christmas

4.White Christmas

3. Elf

2. A Christmas Story

1. Christmas Vacation

*Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey

*I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas

*Anything by the Killers

*Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Bing Crosby version (it is weird I promise)

*90% of the Time Life Treasury of Christmas (there is like 10 CDs with 25 songs each so… you do the math)

And to finish up, a little French anecdote since I am living in this wonderful country! At school on Tuesday the Ron Burgundy-esque teacher came up to me and said “Meaghan you are not very tan.” Thanks for the newsflash Ron Burgundy but people normally aren’t tan in the winter. He is actually my favorite teacher and the fact that he says all these random Ron Burgundy things to me just makes him even better. I love crazy French people.

Ahhhh I love typing… and Christmas. Hope this got you in the spirit!!!

Halloween is over… you know what that means!

Thats right people, as of November 1st it is officially acceptable (according to me and anyone else obsessed with the holiday season) to start listening to Christmas music! My beliefs have been officially confirmed by the fact that Kinder has officially released their Christmas products for sale in the grocery stores.

Santa has never looked so good

For those not in the know, Kinder is a chocolate company in Europe that is da bomb. All their chocolate is amazing, and I don’t even like chocolate. That good.  Also another sign from the heavens that it is completely socially acceptable to listen to holiday music is that not only did Justin Bieber release an album on Nov. 1, but Michael Buble did too. Call me crazy or weird or schwatevz, I don’t care because I’ve been listening to both on repeat. And it is awesome.

Anyways break is over starting tomorrow. I’m pretty happy about that since I need some direction in my life. However, I don’t work on Fridays so I just have to work for 3 hours tomorrow afternoon and then I am free. Did I ever mention that my job is awesome? WOOP WOOP.

The end of my break was supa fun. I went to Marseille for a few days with Stephanie and Mika. Everyone in town kept telling us that we were for SURE going to get mugged/robbed/murdered while in Marseille because I guess its kind of dangerous. But then again, pretty much any other city in the world is more dangerous than Nyons haha except for maybe Mayberry. Anyways, since I’m a little bit of a crazy person, I felt the need to knit myself a money belt for my credit card and ca$h money.

Don't even think about tryna steal my moniez! I have these bad boiz

Don’t pretend like you don’t wish you had a sweet money belt that was custom made by me! Actually if anyone wants one I’ll knit you one for 5 euros/dollars. Ok enough with the shameless self promotion… It worked out pretty awesome aside from the fact that it made me look like I was pregnant in most of my pictures. Case in point, me with the Barbapapa section I found in a store:

Is that a Barbapapa under my shirt or just an awesome money belt?????

So needless to say I looked a little funky in all my pictures because of my super nifty money belt. However I don’t know anyone who has made themselves a money belt before so I still think its awesome. Zing.

Marseille itself was really cool. I really liked it. It was very beautiful and had some really awesome restaurants. We met some other assistants staying at the hostel we were at so it was fun to hang out with them. All in all I think it was a good trip!

I'm on a boat and its going fast and I got a nautical themed pashmina afghan

At any minute "Eye of the Tiger" is going to start playing...

I had my toez in the water, but I did not have my a$$ in the sand as Zac Brown band would say haha

Also in Marseille I’d like to point out that I found something so elusive and rare in France that I had to make it a Kodak moment. Can you guess what it is? I’ll give you a hint, it is rarer than a unicorn…

If you guessed an old man with a mullet you are my new favorite person! Definitely one of my most favorite pictures from France ever. Thank you French Mullet-Man for absolutely making my day everytime I look at this!!

Well thats about it round these parts… I’ll do a food blog this weekend 🙂

Believed Ham and Crystallized Plug

WOW! Sorry, long time no write. I’m sure all you avid readers (cough my parents cough) are dying to know what I have been up to recently. The good news is LOTS of fun things and I have lots of funny stories to tell so you are in luck (quelle chance!)!! My title is from a menu that Stephanie found in Nyons… the owner tried to have translations of meals in English and this was one that I found. Another favorite was “vagueness of St. Jacques on his crawfish beach” which really meant like clams on crawfish but hey to each their own crappy English translation LOL. I told Stephanie that I’m going to tell the owner that if he gives me free dinner one night I’ll redo his translations so that they actually make sense. If he says no well then it is funny and if he says yes then holla free dinner!

YUM I definitely want "vagueness of St. Jacques" in my belly!

I also started my first week of school last week. I worked two days, what horror! Ha just kidding it was awesome. I think I’ll be working something like half days Mondays and Thursdays and all day Tuesday. My life is awesome! The schools are pretty cool they are just basically like “talk about America” so I tell the kids things like we do nothing but play sports and eat McDonalds erryday and drive SUVs because we have nothing better to do with out time. Just kidding! I do talk a lot about sports though and for some reason spend an inordinate amount of time explaining that America is NOT England. That however has gone right over most children and teachers heads. In one class the teacher said “Alright you are from America you know English, here explain this map of England to the kids.” That ended with a bunch of 10 year olds staring at me like “who the hell is this girl and what is she talking about?” because I stood up there and looked like an idiot. I don’t know the first thing about England’s geography. I said things like “well here are some rivers and that is London and Scotland is at the top and Ireland is over there and yup that’s all you need to know…”

The kids are pretty funny though. One class asked me if, since I lived in America, I knew any rappers. I was like no but I live like 6 hours away from ATL (durrty souf) which is where T.I., Jermaine Dupri, Usher, and Justin Bieber (I’m a biebliever don’t hate), all live. The girls immediately started screaming “JUSTIN BIEBER!!!!” and then asked me if I knew him. I said no but that didn’t stop one girl writing me a love letter on the back of her math notes for him. She asked me to give it to him the next time I go to his house (where she got that out of the conversation I don’t know). The note is written in terrible French and doesn’t really make sense. She says things like “I live near a ‘pisseria’ that you can see my mom from at my house” and that she lives in “nionce.” She also misspelled his name. Before you jump to conclusions and say “oh but it is just a child!” I will say to you she was 10 and I feel like 10 year olds should be able to spell the city that they live in haha.

Justin Bibere pleese come to nionce!!!!! We can eat pissa!

On Friday my friend Mika came to visit and it was super fun. We went out with Stephanie to our fav club called La Ruelle and it was fun. Naturally since I love clubs I am now becoming bffs with the manager and bartenders. SW33T LYFE. Also I’d like to point out that it is our favorite club because it is literally the only thing open past 10:30pm in town. Anyways, the next morning I had to pack for our stage (orientation/learn how to teach/seminar/truc idk) in Grenoble since Stephanie decided to do a weekend in Grenoble before the stage. Unfortunately packing hungover is not conducive to bringing things that one might actually need. I managed to bring an iPOD cord, my charger for my computer, and hairbrush but forgot underwear, pajamas, and enough clothes to wear. I had to buy underwear and PJs in Grenoble. Grenoble was fun though, we couch surfed with a young guy who was nice but a little odd but he was nice for letting us stay so I can’t really complain. We also hiked to the top of the Bastille, which was AH-MAZING!!!!!!

Str8 illin with Mika at La Ruelle the most bumpin club in Drome!I didn't photoshop myself in

I didn't photoshop myself in, I promise this is real

Our stage started yesterday and was in a building downtown somewhere and then they bused us up to the Vercors mountains to a town called Autrans. It was super cute! BUT we managed to miss the bus. YUP we missed the bus and were chauffeured up by a nice lady working for the department of education. Embarrassing, yet awesome because tour buses are kind of smelly and weird. Anyways after dinner last night Stephanie and I wandered into town and went to some bar. The manager started talking to us and showed us a bunch of pictures of himself with Prince Albert of Monaco playing petanque together (sidenote: petanque is basically bocce ball but French). I don’t think I really believe that they are bffs or else he wouldn’t be working in a ski town bar, but the pictures looked real enough. Also he was like kind of really old.

Sad faces... bus missed!

Well I’m pretty sure that’s the update… France is getting weirder by the day! I’m sure I’ll have more stories about the chitlins as soon as I start spending more time with them. I’m excited because this week is when our fall break starts and I am heading to Thionville to visit Natalie for a few days then hopefully to Marseille with Mika and Stephanie for the end of it. FRANCE GIVE ME MY PAYCHECK so I am not poor/ using all my savings…  Well until next time avid readers, go and eat some believed ham for me!
